i love this one because one, my house is clean, and two, because i can soooo remember that feeling of getting the green light from my parents on christmas morning that we could go see what santa left us... and it's so fun to watch that magic unfold in our own children.

me... so excited and exhausted and nauseous after delivering turkeys in the vanderville rv with thirty other people, and excited for santa to come, and excited to get this show on the road.

oliver... sullen and looking like he's thoughtfully plotting a rebellion.

the season to give

as if all the gifts thoughtfully picked out

and showered on the kids wasn't enough,

nana and pa had one more special thing planned.

each child was given a budget of $50,

and with this generous amount

they were able to pick out items at the store

to give to the food bank for those in need.

armed with shopping carts,

lists of needed food items,

and calculators,

went up and down every aisle

scooping up and adding up food,

all beaming with the gesture of charity.

the kids had so much fun!

this was the perfect activity to get them in the spirit of giving.

we will remember this for a long time.

we snuck in a super quick trip to utah to celebrate christmas with chris' family. i think we were there a total of 24 hours, but we sure made every minute count. we had a delicious dinner at shelly and nates beautiful house which we didn't contribute to, but sure enjoyed;) after sharing gifts, the kids did a candybar exchange... they couldn't have been more delighted. following a restful night spent at nana and pa's house, we enjoyed a relaxing day of kicking back and some special service to get in the spirit of giving. every time i get together with these amazing people, i realize how much i miss them and love them. this past year has made me hold close moments like this and really take it all in. it's hard not to get overly sentimental, but looking at our loved ones faces and thinking of what genuinely fantastic people they are brings me so much joy!

Ollie played Basketball with his buddies and really improved on his "baller skillz."

When I looked at these pictures I kind of freaked out because he looked so tall and grown up. Oliver has always been ahead of his time, but for some reason I've really noticed him turning into a young man lately. This next year will be a special one for him since he's turning eight. I think eight year olds are the tops... still young enough to cuddle, but old enough to read chapter books and do their own hair:)

i've had this mother daughter surprise planned for weeks
and could hardly keep it in.
as soon as addy got home from school today
i told her i needed her to help me finish christmas shopping.
she protested.
then i said, "actually, i'm kidnapping you."
she protested.
then i said, "you don't say no, when someone's trying to kidnap you."
then we both laughed
because that just sounds ridiculous.
finally she relunctantly got in the car and we were off.
first we went to dinner and got way too full on pasta and breadsticks.
then we hit the freeway.
i handed her a special stocking and inside to her surprise
was a candy bar, and tickets to the mindy gledhill "winter moon" concert.
she died.
we had such an amazing time together.
i don't know what came over me while mindy sang...
maybe it was the beautiful strings of the teton chamber orchestra,
maybe it was the lights and snowflakes hung above our heads,
maybe it was the sweet fluffy red dress and her flawless heartfelt voice,
or maybe it was my own angel sitting next to me holding my hand.
i was a cry baby through the whole concert.
the last song i took that moment with my daughter and gently tucked it in my
"freeze this magic forever" file.
it was such a special night that we will both treasure.
i love my addy,
and i love surprise mother daughter dates.

Landons Egypt presentation

EGYPT

A few years ago Chris and I were lucky enough to travel to Africa for a week (which I still need post about), and on our way home we stayed in Egypt for a night and spent a day visiting the museum and taking in some of the famous landmarks... we also ate some amazing egyptian food. Since then, Addy and Landon have both done reports on Egypt in school, and our trip has benefitted our family more than we thought it ever would. I love to travel, in fact I ache to travel. I learn so much when I submerse myself in a new culture, and it reminds me of how many diverse lifestyles there are out there. If I could, I would take my children all over the world to share these experiences with them so we could all learn and grow together... someday I hope we'll be able to do things like that. Landon did a great job of describing the food and culture, and I like the added touch of my scarf as a turban on his head:)

You kiddos did awesome!!

I love our dance studio... the teachers are top notch, they set a high standard and bring a great spirit to every performance. The costumes are very modest (as modest as dance costumes can be) and the dance moves are not hoochie-like and suggestive. I always come away feeling uplifted and really feel the joy in the dancing... in fact many times I'm brought to tears because of the beauty in the movement. It is such a neat thing to watch your children blossom and grow when they dedicate themselves to something. They know they have to eventually perform in front of hundreds of people so they try their hardest and overcome insecurities, which I think only helps them become strong confident people... I'm so proud of them!

i made the mistake of singing happy birthday first and plopping a giant festive delicious carrot cake in front of the thrilled offspring...

and then i took it away and gave him his dinner,

Good golly were we looking forward to Thanksgiving this year or what?! Such a perfect time to escape to the wilderness and just be together huh? Am I asking a lot of rhetorical questions? It was noisy and crazy, but somehow we found comfort in all the busy bodies... like a buzzing hive full of worker bees. My heart almost broke in two when Connor (Brian's son) was sitting at the bar drinking his rootbeer and talking about how much fun he would be having if his dad was there, and how much he missed him. We sure did miss you Brian. It's hard to carry on with you not here, but I suppose we'll re-learn how to be a family

with you watching over us.

Together Addy and I planned and carried out the annual activity in young womens where the girls share the personal progress projects they have completed throughout the year. Months ago while shopping at Fred Meyer I saw a cute canvas with a picture of an owl on it and the words "Know Whoo you Are". I immediately thought how darling of a theme that would be for a future activity. After making every owl creation known to man for this night, I slowly watched the once cute idea resemble a baby shower... it's an understatement when I say I'm a little "owled out". Despite this, and the fact that only eight girls were able to come that night, I feel like we had a great message and it was neat to see all the projects and value quilts the girls finished this year. Addy's is below...

It is hard to describe the empty hole that is left when a loved one passes away. You have to keep reminding yourself that they are gone, and things won't be the same for a very long time... at least that's how it seems. I know this life is but a blink of time in the eternities, but the week after Brian died seemed to be suspended... I felt underwater and frozen... everything seemed so unreal. I feel like in my short lifetime I've gone through some pretty heavy trials, but having to face the array of emotions that swept over me in those days was unlike anything I had ever experienced. At first I was shocked and devastated. Anger soon took over me and I couldn't keep my mind from racing... what about his amazing angelic wife and their children, his adoring parents, his vibrant life and siblings that loved him and longed to have him back. Two days after we all got the news of his passing, as many as could, met at the temple to find solace and peace. I immediately was washed over by the most warm and enveloping love. My thoughts were turned to an ETERNAL PERSPECTIVE. I knew that the pain I was feeling was understood by my Savior, that Brian knew I loved him, and that healing would take place if I made the choice to learn from this event and carry on to be a better person. Even through the viewing, the funeral, the burial, and all the family time we had together grieving and mourning, I realized that LIFE is LOVE and all that really matters. Love your brother, love your neighbor, and judge not. This has been one of the most life changing moments and tests of my beliefs. Miracles starting happening within our family every day and I know that prayers and angels were attending us. There is a lot we don't know about what the spirit world is like after we pass on, however, we do know that this is not the end. I have faith that I will see Brian again, and I also know my understanding will be broadened. I feel like I want to be a better person and make the most of my time on this earth. I want to take each moment and cherish it and soak up all the learning I can. As every single member of the family put a shovel full of soil upon Brians grave I couldn't help but think what our father promised us when he said "something great is going to come from this".

Brian Frank VanderSloot returned home to his loving Heavenly Father on Thursday, November 3, 2011.

Brian was born to Frank VanderSloot and Kathleen Zundel on June 28, 1974 in Seattle, Washington. Brian lived in a variety of places including Oregon, Minnesota, Singapore, and Idaho, where he resided most of his life. He was the third oldest of five siblings. After Frank married Belinda Boyack and Kathleen married Wayne Walden, he enjoyed an even larger family of 18 brothers and sisters. His family remembers the honorable way he led his life, the promises he always kept, and his selfless humility. Brian graduated from Skyline High School in Idaho Falls. Brian was self-taught in computers at a very young age. He never had formal training for computers but he was a whiz. He loved music and teaching himself to play the guitar which talent he eventually used to sing to his children at bedtime. Starting at age 14, Brian began lifting weights and kept himself in top shape for the rest of his life. He was known for his enviable and large biceps and loved to show them off at any opportunity he could.

Brian received his bachelor’s degree in Business from Brigham Young University. He served an honorable mission from 1993-1995 in the Porte Alegre South Mission in Brazil for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved the Brazilians and served them with all his heart. He developed a love of the Portuguese language, which he taught to his boys. Brian served in various positions in his church faithfully and lovingly. He also was a founding member and Chairman of the board at White Pine Charter School. He volunteered hundreds of hours to serve the children there.

After graduating and starting his new career at Melaleuca, he married Jennifer Coburn of Sugar City, Idaho in July 19, 2002. They were blessed with two special boys — Connor and Isaac “Rocky.” He was dedicated completely to those two little boys. He was their hero. He was passionate about their educational development in all areas. The boys loved waking up early in the morning, crawling in bed with him and cuddling. They were so affectionate with each other: cuddling, hugging, and kisses.

Brian was a hard working, talented, and innovative thinker for Melaleuca. Over the last 11 years he has worked in several management positions at Melaleuca. Most recently, Brian served as the company’s director of web marketing. He has also overseen Melaleuca’s operations in Singapore and served as regional director of south Central and Northwest regions as director of call center operations. His colleagues describe Brian as extremely hard working, exceptionally talented and consummately professional. He was loved by thousands of Melaleuca employees and marketing executives around the world.

On April 7, 2011 Brian married the love of his life, Paige (Bentley Mortensen) VanderSloot, who added five wonderful children — Laurie, Megan, Rachel, Hannah, and Michael. This new family was a dream come true for Brian. Brian was an affectionate and loving husband to his sweetheart. He was very hardworking and driven to be the best husband and father he could be. He put the needs of others before his own continually. As a dad he was so hands on, so passionate about teaching and educating his children—whether it was teaching them how to ride a bike, or teaching them about exotic fruits.

Brian loved adventure in whatever form he could find it. He loved racing the car fast to get a reaction out of the kids—and his wife, building dry ice bombs for family viewing on the 4th of July, taking seven children on so many adventures. They explored the Grand Canyon, the Redwood forest, the Oregon Coast, Yellowstone Park, and many more places.

Brian constantly reached out to fill the needs of others. He served so many and never expected anything back. He was all you could hope for and ever want in a husband, a father, a son, a brother, an uncle, a friend, and a colleague. He is loved by so many and we will miss him so very much.

Brian is survived by his wife, Paige; his precious boys, Connor, 8, Rocky, 6; his new blessed children; Laurie, 11, Megan, 9, Rachel, 7, Hannah, 5, and Michael, 2; his parents Frank and Belinda VanderSloot, Kathleen and Wayne Walden; LaurieKae Banks (Sam), Cheri Lima (Antonio), Tiffany Smith, Matthew Trent VanderSloot (Charisa), and Cassie VanderSloot, Sara Schofield (Chris), Emily Smith (Jesse), Aaron Robinson, Eliza Ruys (Jason), Rachel Belnap (Devin), Jairus Robinson, Sadie Sabin (Jeff), Caleb Robinson, Michael Walden (Michelle), Jeff Walden (Susan), Melanie Dale (Jon), Joel Walden (Sarah), Jason Walden, and many other beloved family members.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 8, 2011, at the Ammon LDS Foothills Stake Center (3934 East 49 South) with Bishop Jake Dustin, of the Ammon 27th Ward, officiating. The family will visit with friends on Monday from 6-8:00 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home East Side (963 S. Ammon) and on Tuesday from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to the services at the church. A private family burial will be held.

It has been waaaay too long since we've visited with my dear Grandma and Grandpa Bair. They live in San Diego so we knew we had to drop by and give them a squeeze since they were so close to where we were staying. The moment my grandmother heard we were coming she began baking banana bread, oatmeal cookies, orange dream jello, potato salad, and more! Grandpa Bair even printed up a darling welcome sign on the front door so we knew we had arrived at the right place! They made all of our children (and ourselves) feel so loved. All of the beautiful touches in their home reminded me of my childhood when I use to stay a week in the summertime with my sister at their home... it was bliss! Grandpa was close behind making sure we had all we needed and offering a wink or two. Oh how we love them! After many hugs and pictures, we goodbyed from our car with goodies in hand and saw them wave until their house disappeared.

Capistrano (oct 14-23)

Chris' parents planned a most splendid trip for a weeks stay at a beachhouse in Capistrano. They grew up coming here almost every Christmas, but we all agreed that if we came sooner in the year we might be able to enjoy some warmer weather. Warm or not, sand and the sound of the waves crashing against the beach at night was all we needed to relax and forget our worries. Totally chill and free to do whatever we pleased all week, was just the medicine our busy family needed to rejuvenate our souls.

Oh Tade.

I have learned so much from you this past year.

I have learned that I should trust my instincts. I have learned that even though you have a high spirited, high energy, high activity personality, that with time, things mellow out just enough. Your sweet pixie smile and warm heart always won me in the end, and even though it would have been super easy to take a different route to deal with the crazy stage you were in, I'm so glad that I listened to the spirit and rode the wave. Now you are more mature, yet still strong willed, but I can see if I am patient you will grow to be something great. What an awesome power being a parent is that can spoil or nurture a child... what an amazing responsibility it is to make sure you turn out to be all that God has intended for you. Thank you for being understanding and forgiving when my fuse is short and thank you for not smearing anymore yogurt into the piano keys.

It's a good thing Landon doesn't read this blog because I'm about to gush about how dang darling he is... I mean really, have you ever seen such a cute handsome young man in your life? Didn't think so. This year was special because he received the priesthood which means a lot of things, but mostly that I get to proudly look upon him every Sunday as he joins the other stripling warriors passing sacrament at church. Landon is the first to give me a heartfelt hug and the first to get his jobs done. Landon is smart and creative and excells at all he puts his mind to. I already have several arranged marriage proposals by other mothers for their own cute daughters to snatch him up someday... not that we take part in such activities, but it's fun to see that I'm not the only one who thinks so highly of him ;) Thanks to all the family that traveled so far to support his priesthood ordination and be here for such a neat day!

My First Learning Circle (sept 7)

Our family moved to Idaho Falls two and a half years ago, and I'm just now starting to see beyond the adjustment of raising our last toddler and slowly remodeling our 70's house enough to add an exciting "me" project to the mix. After hearing about "learning circles" from a dear friend who started her own, I knew this was just the thing I needed. I thoughtfully and prayerfully decided on who I could ask to be a part of this group (afterall, there are so many exceptional women around me!) I proposed the idea to a few friends, but mostly women I admired from afar that I wanted to get to know better, and who I thought would add great discussion to a group like this. It was a little tricky keeping the group to just 10 people, especially since I could have included my sisters and other women from my neighborhood that I enjoy being around, but in the end, I let the spirit guide me in knowing who best could benefit from being part of our group. Already I have seen blessing and miracles from sharing our intimate lives together.

Part book club, part girls’ night out and part support group, a Learning Circle is a group of mothers who read an article on motherhood each month and come together to discuss it while sharing their own experiences and ideas. Each month we read a short and powerful essay on motherhood provided by The Power of Moms website that goes with the month’s theme. Then we come together to discuss what we read. Topics include patience, optimism, priorities, organization, balance, fun, progress – topics all moms need!

The tricky part about our children raising steers is that we can't go on any extended trips away from home. So as soon as fair was over we took a fun trip down to Utah where Chris' family patiently waited for us to celebrate some birthdays and party it up at the new Jon and Leslie resort;) Chris also took the older kids to Lagoon as a reward for all their hard work. We sure cherish this family time and wish it was more often that we could come and visit. Distance makes the heart grow fonder, for sure.

Year number two a success! Addy and Landon completed another TERRIFIC year of raising their steers for 4H and worked so hard sunrise to sunset the whole week of fair. I'm beaming at the leaps and bounds these kids have taken since we first started and didn't even know what a steer was! There are so many character building qualities they have gained... strong work ethic, dependability, compassion towards animals, responsibility, sacrafice, finance skills, manure skills... it's really taught them to make a goal and achieve that goal.

Every creative girl dreams of having a sister who likes to "make things" as much as her and who has the entrepreneur bug just like her... that sister of mine is Simply Sadie Jane. We have over ten years age difference, but we are so much alike that it's almost too much for the world to handle, hehehe. Sadie invited me to make up some "stuff" and collect all my vintage goodies to share a booth with her at the White Place Flea Market. It was a blast! I loved experiencing this with her, and although I've done a boutique or two in my time, her enthusiasm and sparkling charm made it even more fun than any other I've done before. Every year some of our outstanding neighbors and friends put together a fundraiser for all ages. The proceeds of the Ride for Kids goes towards adaptable bicycles and tricycles for children with special needs. This year I volunteered to do face painting for all the kids after their bike rides. He opened his own rustic chic salon in Jackson Hole.

It is perfection.

J styled and designed every last detail himself,

He will make you look and feel like a goddess or trojan warrior,

whatever the case may be... uhhhh.

Jairus is one of my best friends and I kind of think he's the bee's knees,

Country kids don't quite have the same experience that "subdivision" kids do in the summertime where they can just walk out their door and have ten delinquents to choose from up and down the road to play and run from house to house with. So our kids created "night games" where they organize treats and glow sticks and call up other lonely red neck kids to come share in some crazy outdoor antics. The key is to make sure everyone stays outside, doesn't step in dog poop, and doesn't fall in a hole or get sprayed by a skunk. Good Times.

Nana and Pa brought up cousin Gabi to support the kids spring dance recital. Addison and Oliver are in a HIP HOP class and they love it! Nana and Pa also drove up a new car we purchased in Utah and ended up adding hours to their drive because of sketchy weather. We are so grateful for our supportive grandparents and all the sacrafices they make to let us all feel special!

Oliver had an assignment in school to send Flat Stanley somewhere on vacation and he immediately thought of his cousin Crew in sunny California, which is pure opposite of what we were currently experiencing in freezing snow covered Idaho. Crew did such a great job at taking Flat Stanley to all the special places in his town, he even got to see some palm trees. Oliver received an A+ on his assignment! Thanks for all your help Crew... and parents;) !

This year Ollie boy turned seven on May seventh. He continues to be a genius and he continues to crack us up. We love to tease our kids when there is a great reward involved, so this year we made him open a box of springs for his birthday... he was pretty annoyed... and confused, but then we explained that they were for the new trampoline (actually a family gift). Some of our family came over to celebrate with chocolate cake and pita sandwiches. Oliver is currently digging Legos, reading, and writing stories with fantastic illustrations. We love our Oliver!!

everyday i realize more and more how much we were made for eachother. sometimes after going out to dinner we will need to pick up a few things at the store, and he always knows how to turn this into an extension of our date. one of my favorite things about him (aside from that kissable spot right next to his eye) is his ability to make me laugh. one night i couldn't find him in the aisles and as i turned the corner there he was, talking to a myley cyrus pillow. he was laughing so hard at his cleverness that tears were streaming down his cheeks... and mine.

Amazing Jana orchestrated a goodbye party for our Bishop Jerry and his wife and my friend Judy tonight since they are sadly moving away. She decorated everything so cute to match the theme, no surprise because have I mentioned that she's amazing. Sweet Mindy made such a neat video slideshow of their family pictures... cute Aimee and the primary made a quilt with all the childrens handprints on it... and the young women put on a hilarious skit. We were so worried we wouldn't have enough food to feed 200+ people, but just like the "loaves and fishes" there WAS enough for everyone... and then some.

I had been cooking (and cleaning) all day (totally worth it for such a fantastic woman like Judy!!) and several catastrophes happened along the way- burned butter that I forgot about cooking on the stove for caramel corn exploded when I poured it in a jar shooting shards of glass and melted grease everywhere, and Tade having a freak attack upon waking up from a nap panicked and peed all over the floor, I swear it was like he was holding the pacific ocean in his bladder (along with an "Oh Shiz" moment when I realized just how much pork I actually needed to cook) but things always turn out in the end, and even my sweet sister Sadie made some cookies to help me out... Thank you girlie!

Pulled Pork Recipe:

for every 3-4 pounds of meat add

1 cup of salsa

1 cup of brown sugar

(I also added chopped green peppers and onions)

cook on low for 8 hours in your crockpot.

about Jerry and Judy's future adventures. I heard her say tonight that she has lived in Idaho all her life and how weird it is to move to a different place. Funny how one state over can have such a different atmosphere, but I remember feeling the exact same way about my move from Utah to Oregon, and then Utah to Idaho. Change is hard at first... starting over is never easy... but it will get better with time, and they both have such warm and friendly personalities that making friends will be effortless.

I like my voice

God delivers messages through goosebumps. Just a moment ago a conversation with my grandmother from last week about writing and poetry and life and missions slid into my mind. When she said, "I like my voice" it left such a powerful impression on me that I haven't been able to forget it... like a song that plays over and over again in my head. Grandma Mary was sharing her wisdom about growing as a writer and praying for gifts. If you want something, if you lack a gift, pray for it she says. Let the spirit guide you, write for yourself, and for God, don't compare yourself to others. I asked her so many questions and she answered so many... she has always been my mentor. I have grown through the years listening to her poetry, her songs, her stories about dragons and Joseph of Egypt. I have recently struggled with my own voice as doubt and discouragement creep into my head. I yearn to express what's in my heart, and I have felt with the over-abundance of writers out there, that I am but a mere whisper. Then when she said, "I like my voice" it hit me, don't write to please "them", write just because it's who you are... let it flow, cultivate your expression, meld it into something organic, not forced. Sometimes I feel like I'm in preschool, making sentences with a limited vocabulary... like I know something is inside of me wanting to get out, and I can't translate my emotions into human language. I want to be able to say that "I like my voice".

Minutes later after I thought about my grandmother, I opened an email message from my mom saying that her dear aunt Helen, my grandmothers sister, had passed away suddenly last night. It feels raw to talk about this, but I can't help but notice the timing of my thoughts and the way the spirit was telling me something deep and important if I would listen, and I did. Sometimes getting answers to prayers is like retrieving broken morse code, snatching parts here and there... when at a magical moment, the dots and dashes come together to complete the whole message, making perfect sense... harmony. My great Aunt Helen was an amazing poet. She won many awards and was as graceful and talented as a woman could be. She will be so missed, but we have her words, her voice. We can carry her and visit her thoughts when we read her poems. Because she has opened her heart and shared it in ink, we have her with us always... in that respect, writing makes you eternal.

work boots

I never thought seeing my kids in work boots would melt my heart like it does, but guess what, serious meltage. Now if I could just acquire an affection for the smell of manure left on those workboots, then the circle of life would be complete. Addy and Landon religiously feed their steers at 6:30am and 6:30pm... give or take a few minutes:) I'm so impressed by their work ethic and care for these tender animals. Without reminder, Landon replaces the steers muddy mucky water with fresh clear water even in the pitch dark, and Addy always takes time to scratch their dirty heads to gain their trust and let them know she's a friend. Since they started taking care of them a few months earlier than last year, I'm afraid it's going to be twice as hard once auction time comes to part ways. But how grateful I am for all the lessons they're learning, and it makes living in these long, cold, annoying winters worthwhile... almost.

conference afternoon

This is how we spent our Saturday-

Chris, despite his eyes being closed during general conference talks, always seems to be able to recount the messages with perfection... how does he do that? Aahhh, he looks so cute all tuckered out... I just want to cuddle right up next to him.

Tade was having difficulties. Just keeping it real people. As a side note, his name seemed to come up in every conversation I had with my friends in the days before.. I am excited to implement new things I've learned, and I know someday this "special" stage he's in will pass... it will pass right?

It's so cool that anyone around the world can just hop on the internet and stream live feed of conference right in their home. Every single talk today was so terrific and taught me something. I can't wait to read them again and highlight and dissect each inspired message.

Addy made yummy smoothies for everyone as a Saturday treat. She has been cooking and baking so many fun things lately, perhaps I should put her in charge of a couple meals during the week...

The kids cousin Elaine who goes to school at BYU Idaho sang beautifully in the choir during the afternoon session. The music during conference is equally as wonderful as the spirit felt during the talks. Elaine is in the light blue shirt on the right.

The girls always sneak away for dinner and dessert while the guys are at the evening priesthood meeting. Tonight we had Cafe Rio salads and Orange Leaf frozen yogurt. I was in a fruity mood, but couldn't resist a few gummi bears.

I just stole away to Utah for less than 48 hours and tried to fit in as many visits as I could with family and friends that I don't get to see enough of. Lunch with Shera from Oregon City... dinner to my sister Cheri who just had her fourth child three weeks ago... dessert with some of my old card group from Lehi... overnighter and breakfast with my dear Grandma Mary... lunch with darlings from Tooele with an early owl delivery to Nancy... dinner reunion with old chums from Farmington... and a quicky peek to get inspired at forever 21, dear lizzie, hip and humble, and koo de ker. I drove home after dinner on a natural high and my cheeks hurt from smiling and laughing so much... what a great feeling! How did I get so lucky to be associated with such beautiful people? This is one of the perks of moving so much throughout my life... meeting amazing people, and keeping those friendships even after leaving that place. There are so many more I wish I could have seen... next time.

Sometimes at our house the computers and phones don't work and the internet is down. Actually this has been happening a lot lately... I call it being "in the VORTEX". It's as if our house is perfectly positioned within the universe on some wiggity twilight zone time continuum that makes it get similiar problems to what planes experience flying over the Burmuda Triangle. So due to technical difficulties, I couldn't blog all weekend... but I think it was because nerdish energy was so thick in the air, I probably could have cut it with a light saber... or wifi cable... or best buy credit card... or some slow motion matrix manuever.

Jason, Chris' brother from another mutha came to stay a couple days with us. This is a chance for "the boys" (brothers and friends) to get all the geekery out of their systems. And I don't name drop words like nerd and geek to be a meany, but rather as terms of endearment that they give me license to use freely in reference to their awesomeness.

Friday night they started at Five Guys Burgers and a Heart-attack (and Fries) and then they went to a dorky man movie, I forget the name;) The rest of the night (until 4am) was spent gaming it up at our house. Saturday, after a semi healthy lunch created by mother hen (me) to cancel out the chips and candy consumed the night before, Chris took Jason and our two oldest kiddos shooting in the freezing cold. I think despite this they had a fun time. Chris is a cowboy at heart and loved trying out his new Henry Goldenboy 22. Jason is adored by all his nephews and niece. Charlie especially took a liking to him even with it being their first meeting. Saturday night after dinner at Betos (pronunciation is debatable) the boys congregated once more to the xbox's while munching on homemade caramel popcorn and giant soda's. The next morning Jason left like a thief in the night to get back in time for work in Salt Lake City. We sure wish we saw him and his sister Alison more often, but are grateful for the sacrafice he made to drive up here and visit us... I might add, that I did sweeten the deal and bribed him with sour patch watermelons:)

I scrounged up all the green things I could find in my kitchen for our special green dinner. Those naughty Leprechauns were sneaky and overturned the kitchen chairs and left green footprints on our counter. The king of the Leprechauns, Tade, proclaimed as he discovered this, "Dad is going to freak!"... it was pretty cute. The kids eventually found some treats left behind in the guest room, or "Nana and Pa's room".

It's like someone has finally given me permission to get rid of things. I had a major "Aha" moment when I read it, especially the "touch it once" rule and considering how much "energy" it takes to keep something. I've been cleaning for years, (or attempting to) and have been held back by certain obsessive compulsive tendencies. Now the trick will be to apply what I've learned... would you mind if I left a couple boxes of things at your place, just in case I need them in the future?

One of my all time favorite quotes by my mom when she asks what I'm doing and I tell her that I'm cleaning my house is she will always suggest that I "light a candle, and turn on some music"... works great until I'm too distracted by the music and I start to dance and forget what I'm doing.

My mom just stopped by, for reals, right as I'm typing this. My house is a capitol D for disaster. Is there anything worse than when someone surprises you with a visit and your house is trashed, when just the day before is was beautifully sparkling? I guess I don't know what that's like since there is always some corner of my house in disarray, but that is going to change. My mom was so gracious and acted like she didn't even notice the mess, but let's be honest, it's like trying not to notice that hobo sitting in that chair eating a slice of pizza... in his diaper.

Big Brained

Seriously, this kids big round noggin is almost impossible to get shirts over, but I just keep telling myself, there's a big brain in there... and only mothers can say that their kids have big heads... mothers, and pediatricians. Charlie has been my tenderness through these rough days with my difficult three year old. When Tade is yelling at me that I'm a "poop slice!" or a "pee wax!" or a "butthead!" (I pray he doesn't say that last one at church, and he created the first two himself, impressed?), then I know I can scoop up my little wibble wobble walking man and get instant love and reassurance that there is goodness in the universe... not that Tade isn't good, I love him with all my heart, but even the relatives are suggesting we start his own website called "Tade-tastrophies".

Emily is a sweet and hilariously clever woman I met through a blog swap, and is living with her American family in Japan. She has written updates on the state of their area and the amazing things people around them are doing to help eachother. Just today she was able to "deliver" hugs to two girls staying at the Misawa Air Force Base... from their mothers. Emily's thoughts into what you really find yourself needing after a natural disaster are so interesting and made me rethink our preparedness. I was explaining to my son the other day that living in Idaho we won't find ourselves in the same situation as coastal parts of Japan, but we should be prepared for any emergency just the same.

This is real life

We decided as a family last year to cancel tv (cable and local) in order to clean our home of useless and worldly information and entertainment. This has been one of the greatest choices we have ever made. It has made such a difference in how we spend our time and the spirit we bring here. Occasionally I have withdrawals from some of my favorite design or food programs, but TV shows and commercials have become so frighteningly innapropriate, that truthfully, we are all surviving just fine without all that junk. Now we just watch movies through Netflix and DVD's, which are closely monitored. My next step is to get rid of the xbox... but then we might become perfect and have to be translated so might as well keep Lego Batman and Call of Duty on the shelf.

When catastrophes happen in our own town or in the world we are the last to find out about it, especially if my computer is down, and since we don't take the newspaper (which I need to change), I rely on the internet to stay informed. I can't express how desolated I am catching up on the aftermath of the tsunami in Japan. I am grateful that I don't have tv to remind me everyday of what's going on, but at the same time I feel like I have my head in the sand. I feel helpless and desperate for those dear people. I must think of a way to help. Do you have any ideas? Maybe another joint effort with the kids and their friends is in order... or maybe I'll contact the Humanitarian Center of our church and ask them what the needs are.

Sometimes, all we can do is pray.

For over a week now the Imperial Army has been attacking my computer, and Darth Virus shuts it down every three minutes... totally frustrating! Have you ever gone a week without a computer? It's like Chewbacca going a day without growling. Obi-Wan (Chris) was crazy busy getting ready for the big Bull Sale that turned out to be a huge success, so he wasn't able to come rescue me from the droid's predicament... I pretty much turned into Jaba for the week. So much for posting everyday, but I will continue to use The Force daily even if the internet doesn't witness my mad Jedi skillz.

Crying with Tess

Reading Tess of the D'Urbervilles during the climax of the longest winter of my life did not bode well for Sara. But maybe, it just made my isolated shell of a spirit that much more romantic and embellished. The ugly cry made its curtain call several times this week as I weathered through some crumbling matters, and this book only dotted the i's, and crossed the t's of my emotions. The beginning to middle built slowly and beautifully, and I anticipated that the worst situation to the plot was past, until toward the end of the book all at once Thomas Hardy decided to make milk sour. With flawed and human characters, I found my mind becoming frustrated with misunderstandings and lack of forgiveness... how apropos to life. Tragic Tess was a strong woman, and yet so weak in her blinding love. I'm so glad Nadia chose this as the first book for the bookclub, because I don't think I would have ever found it on my own. I adore it when I know nothing about a book before I read it and I'm surprised with each page turn... books are so awesome... and enveloping... good thing I'm reading Jane Eyre next, that's not depressing AT ALL...(wink wink) Actually it's one of my favorite stories, so I can't wait to dive in!

Blush and Boxes

I think my mantle is officially the "family storefront" for the holiday's. I love decorating it for each passing celebration of the seasons. It's so fun to gather just the right items to portray the feeling we want in our home for that month... tonight I will take down Valentinesy love stuff and replace it with Easter... I'm hoping my springy vibes will usher in warmer weather.

The boys had fun this year decorating their valentine boxes for school. Addy was a little sad watching them work on everything since she has moved past all the juvenile preparations now that she's in junior high. It's these weird milestones that really show me how fast time is flying by.

Oliver's box was all about simplicity! And just as I imagined, his box meant to look like a moldy piece of cheese from out the children's book Diary of a Wimpy Kid, produced an epidemic within the classroom of the "cheese touch". I helped with his class party this year and it was so fun to watch the kids excitedly pass out their valentines to eachother. Check out his buddies birthday cake box, what a masterpiece:) They ate yummy treats laced with sugar, played valentines bingo, and made candy airplanes.

Hang Time

We've been longing for our out of state family so much lately, and one our sisters is about to have a baby any second now (holla Cheri!) Even with a family as large as ours is, we still notice a void when someone is missing. Whenever anyone comes into town, hang time together is savored where we can eat and talk and share advice with eachother... but mostly eat. This picture was taken right before we left for the airport to welcome home Caleb.

The cousins are already learning the fine art of a dance party... and just wait until that shiny disco ball is hung in our living room, then the funky times will really begin!!

Valentines Homecoming

Valentines Evening this year was spent celebrating "LubLub"/Caleb/Elder Robinson returning from his honorable two year mission to Culiacan Mexico. He left a punk and returned a man... just kidding... but in all seriousness, it is no joke when these nineteen year old boys are sent all over the world, to serve and share the life of Christ for 24 impressionable, sacraficing, and humbling months of their young lives. I can think of no better maturing and growing experience than this. Being the last of the brothers in our family to go, it was an exciting moment when he appeared at the top of the stairs of the airport... especially for our mom, who I think had held her breath since he had left hoping for his safety and success. Can you imagine the worries a mother feels while her child is gone away for so long only able to call in a couple times a year, wondering if they're okay and fed? But with Caleb's weekly emails, he shared his testimony and experiences with us, and reassured us (and surprised us too:) that all was well, and he was totally capable on his own. We read as he transformed his life and spirit into greatness, molding himself and others into what God intends of all men, to rise and shine forth. My favorite quality of a missionary, is their smile. It just exudes happiness and joy. What a glow Caleb had that night when we were all reunited, and what a special feeling of love filled the room where he hugged all the family members old, and new (babies and friends;) that greeted him with anticipation. On Sunday the 27th he spoke in his ward reporting on his time spent in Mexico and two things impressed me most... the first was his call to the young men in the ward to get their lives in order, humble themselves and be ready to serve a mission for the Lord. It was a very powerful moment and the hairs on my arms stood up when he passionately shared his testimony and love for the gospel in the Spanish language... by the way, how cool is it that two years ago all he knew was hola, or chimichanga, and now he can carry on a conversation in fluent spanish... that is pretty dang awesome! The other thing that impressed me was when his Bishop joked about those who remembered Caleb before his mission, or any young man for that matter, and how changed they are when they return... meaning it is possible for anyone to bring the spirit into their lives and fine upstanding men are all around us. Since he's been home, he has relaxed right back into his role as little brother... stealing drinks of my water, laughing at my jokes, squeezing my love handles, but he also stands a little taller, and that is the most fantastic part of it all. He shares stories from his mission (some mighty frightening) and we can see the journey he has been on. We are all so proud of him and excited to watch the next chapter unfold in his life!
